How To Choose Where You Buy A Lawn Mower

Not only are there many brands of lawn equipment available to the consumer today, there are also several types of retailers where they can be found. Not all retailers are created equal. Here are some points to ponder concerning where you should make your purchase.

Service and Repair

1. Who will service or repair your mower? If you are mechanically inclined you may elect to service your own equipment. If you understand the maintenance schedule and needs of each component that can be a good way to save money. A mistake can also be costly. Buying a lawn mower from a mass merchant usually means you will have to service/repair it yourself or find someone who will do it for you. Normally the best a mass merchant can do is give you the name of a shop that services/ repairs the brand of equipment they sell. If you are not capable, or just don't want the hassle, a local servicing dealer can take care of this for you. Some service shops can and will service/repair all brands, some can or will only service/repair certain brands. If you are not buying from a local dealer, don't assume they can or will help you when you have problems.

2. Are parts readily available? Not all outdoor power equipment retailers sell parts. Even if you plan to do your own service work you will need to find parts. Most major brands have protected sales territories. This means Original Equipment parts are only available at a limited number of authorized dealers. After market parts are available to nearlyall retailers for many of the filters and other common preventative maintenance parts. If the part you need is not a high volume part, odds are it will be found only at an authorized dealer.

Warranty

1. What is covered? Ask what is covered, some warrantys cover parts only and others cover parts and labor. It's also possible to get pick up and delivery paid for on certain brands.

2. How long is the warranty? Most manufacturers offer a 2 year warranty on the major parts, some more and some less. Batteries, belts, and blades are considered wear items that have a much shorter warranty period of 30 days to 6 months. Frames, front axles, and electric clutches are sometimes covered for longer periods.

3. Who will do the warranty work? THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT Not all stores that sell new equipment also do warranty repair. The only way to know is to ask. Who will do the work? What are you responsible for? I have heard numerous stories over the years. Some retailers will give you the phone number of a service center in another town. You may be responsible for transporting the machine to and from the service center. There have even been cases reported where the owner had to a pay fee to have their problem diagnosed. This fee was not refunded even if the repair was covered under warranty.

Now you are ready to shop mowers in person. Ask your neighbors and friends where they do business, this is a good place to start.

Moving to Phoenix, Arizona area... ?
My husband and I are newly weds currently living in Michigan, the thumb area. We are going to be moving to Arizona with in the next month or so, but we are un sure about where to go exactly since there are so many people out there with different views on all of the different cities. We were looking into moving to Surprise, we visited there a few years back and loved it! but, the more research I do the more confused I am getting about it. We are going to be renting an apartment until we get settled and decide if that's where we want to buy a house. I have my Bachelor degree in Criminal Justice, but no job yet. My husband is a sales and parts manager right now for a ATV/ Lawn mower dealer. We will both need jobs when we get out there. we are both 23, but we do not like the party scene any more. So, can anyone tell me where is a good place for us to live and WHY. I would like to hear from people that currently live in the area as well. Thanks so much!! we are not boring, old, 23 year olds'. we are just very mature. we try and be wise with our money, so we don't want to end up in a city that is so expensive we can't afford to do anything like go to the movies or out to dinner. we also don't want a bunch of college freshmen partying it up right next door since we both will have full time jobs to get up and go to daily.

Received damaged lawn mower from EBay purchaser?
I recently bought a brand new lawn mower from a reputable EBay seller. When I received my mower, I found it is damaged possibly due to shipping. I immediately contact the seller to resolve the issue. The seller is willing to send me the parts, but asked me to do the repair myself. However, after 5 hours of futile work, my mower is still damaged. I have neither the skill or the tool to replace the broken parts. The next thing I did was contacting all the nearby lawn mower dealer shop and was told by all of them that shipping damage is not covered by warranty. So the last option for me is to ship the mower back to the seller for a refund, which I have not done because I was told that I am responsible for return shipping, which is approximately $225 for a 100lb mower. Can somebody please provide me some advice on what I should do next? Thanks
